Yesterday the Year 4/5 Fostering Strengths students learnt a new thinking tool called Chalk Talk. They had to silently and collaboratively brainstorm ideas about a simile about Space. We found that it deepened our thinking and everyone was able to contribute. It was hard not to talk though!

Planning for learning
Our Year 7/8 Fostering Strengths students are planning to teach games and science experiments to a group of young students in our school. They have been researching what "good" teachers do, by observing lessons in action and interviewing a student teacher.
Here they are brainstorming their learning around some similes about teaching using the chalk talk technique - that is silent comments on their own and others thinking.
Although the students found this a challenging task they commented that it really deepened and extended their thinking.

Putting our learning into action - planting our local riparian zone
Year 6 students (together with Mr Keith and the support of the St John of God Trust) were able to put their learning into action by planting the riparian zone of our local waterway.

Year 4/5 Thinking hats
Aretha said, "I like learning about thinking hats because you learn more things and it makes you think more about it".
Ben said, "I love learning about space because it is very interesting. I like learning more about Space".
Michael said, "I love learning about Space because I didn't know that a meteor had hit the moon in March".
Joshua said, "I like learning about the thinking hats because it makes me think in a different way".
Sarah said, "I like learning about space because I'll know more about it if I ever get to go there!"

WATER By: Kian And Brianna (yr 6)
WATER.
KIAN And BRIANNA
We have been learning about water this term.We have done a lot of reaserch on water last term including a couple experiments.
Kian
I have learnt a lot from Fostering Strengths, from experiments to taking action in ACS by planting and encouraging others to stop littering and to stop the pollution to water here at the ACS outer bounds. I have learnt that there is still a lot of life even in a puddle of water. Here is a photo of Brianna and I searching for creatures.

In this picture above Kian and I are searching for water invertebrates from our stream just out of the border of A.C.S. Surprisingly our stream has heaps of bugs and animals in and around it. Another thing we did was Mrs Anthonys husband Ross came in and taught us about Basins but my favourite thing we did with him was the oil and clothes experiment here is a picture of me doing it.Fostering strengths learning 2013 term 1 by Thomas

In this picture we learn about what a healthy and contaminated stream looks like.

Brianna looks at the so called 'nappies'.

Brianna demonstrates the 'nappies' in action (removing oil from the water.
Ross shows us the retention and detention basin.
